[Ted had gotten an unusually restful sleep last night compared to the rest of the week, so naturally he was in high spirits. He went to his kids' room where his journal lay open on the floor. the door can be heard opening as Ted speaks.]
Mornin' kiddos!
[They're not in the room

[A groan as he holds his head. So much angst.]

There's a hesitant pause as Rookie glances between the interior of Ted's room and the hallway, having a mental battle with himself on whether or not he should get himself involved in this, before he finally gives a defeated sigh and wanders the rest of the way in.
You're lucky he likes you, civvy.]
From what I understand, they should be back again next year.
[Wasn't even going to try and put a positive light on the bit about the magic castle, so he'd at least attempt to be helpful with what he knew about the kids.]

Who are you?

[He gives a heavy sigh, glancing at Kanaya.]
Just a friend of mine.
[He'd introduce them but... yeah. They're grown enough, they can introduce themselves.]

What's up, mini grey-skinned girl with candy corn horns?]
... Uh. Rookie, ma'am.
[Ted's voice will make him fall silent, but there will be a light nod in response to the 'friend' bit. If only because he wasn't really sure what else to do, and he was feeling kind of awkward all of a sudden.
He'll recover in a second, though.]

It was known from the start that these juveniles would disappear, was it not? [That's said quietly, but with a certain pointed intonation.] This is a routine occurrence in the castle.

[A snappish response that's punctuated by a silence, and then a sigh.]
Sorry, I guess it wouldn't affect you as much...
[He is, of course, assuming that for whatever reason that trolls don't have parents, they also don't have parental instincts.]

[His focus shifts back to Ted with a frown, but he doesn't say anything. Instead, he'll be giving Kanaya another nod as he moves to give a comforting pat on the architect's shoulder and quietly sit down.]
Yes, ma'am. Suppose to happen ever year.
[Doesn't really... want to comment on what the civvy said, so he's just going to stick with being silent and tilting his head quizzically at him. Why wouldn't it affect her, man?]

And it does not. My species does not raise children with the same close adult supervision that yours does. Indeed, it's for the best if grubs and wigglers are not in close contact with adult trolls.

[He's not sure if he adequately expressed it to Kanaya, but due to her genetic make-up, it was probable she'd never understand just how Ted felt.]

[Being so use to having people request that he dropped the titles, Rookie was hardly surprised to hear Kanaya ask him to do the same. Which was why he was capable of falling into a more casual way of speaking as he let his attention shift between both troll and human as they spoke. The conversation itself having gone down a far more stranger path than he normally would have expected, but he'll disregard that long enough to rub the back of his neck and rest against his chair.
Though he honestly didn't even know where to start in terms of words, so he's going to continue observing the two for the moment until he had something to add to the topic.]

[In other words, there was no decision involved.]

Our kind tend to be very... emotionally devoted when it comes to children.
[Though he wasn't sure if he was the right person to explain this, since he couldn't remember having any experience raising kids. Well, aside from babysitting but that didn't happen very often.]

More than likely those children would never have been reproductively viable, if not for the interference of the castle. Though I cannot admit to experimenting, [there might be the hint of a delicate jade green blush there,] trolls and humans likely cannot interbreed.

He just downs some more alcohol and silently stares out his window. Angst angst angst.]
