I cannot say that I know for sure - but often it seems that people are more capable of identifying with others if they can understand their emotions; and if a being does not have them, more often than not it seems that those same people would likely not consider them to be human.
I am not human myself - but more often than not I am mistaken for one. I believe it is likely because I have human emotions.
It has always seemed to me that to truly be human, or like a human, is to have feelings.
