[Zelman's been completely content to keep his head down and avoid having to do any real work over the course of this trip. Just the same, he's been perfectly content to avoid talking to anyone during his stay in the city. he's found himself a nice spot on the beach to read large story books and philosophy volumes instead.
wait, where did he get those books? where did he get the money for those books? and whatever else he's got in that bag of his...]
[she's on her way back to the ship when she spots him on the beach. One eyebrow goes up and she wanders over] We got a whole city to explore and you're just sittin' here, readin'?
Hm? [he looks up at her from over the top of his book, but he looks pleased to see her.] I've seen plenty of cities before. I got what I wanted out of it.
They had vendors with all sorts of things... Fruits and cheeses and some *mei-wei pu-bi bit with chicken that was just about fallin' off the bone...
[there's a small huff, and she'll sit, joining him] Not that there's much in the way of affordin' it, but there's ways of gettin' around that.
[she's actually not talking about stealing, not that she'd be morally opposed. She just usually has luck with getting people to buy her a drink or food.]

Nothin'. Nothin' really. It's just this *hun dan castle's gone and made it so I can't eat fruit. Not even when it makes it so we're somewhere else entirely.
[she gives him a lopsided smile in return] It ain't so bad, I guess. I mean...I miss it somethin' fierce, but seein' the kinds of things other people lose, I s'pose not havin' fruit ain't the worst that could happen.

Well, it ain't the buyin' so much as the company that makes it fun. [though the buying didn't hurt]

[he reaches into his bag for a minute, shuffling things around in a preoccupied sort of way.]
Which leads me to ask--are you fluent in Chinese or is that just a quirk of yours?
