Actually what he's doing is drawing caricatures of whatever resident happens to stick around in the lobby long enough for him to get a good look. His favorite art form? Probably not. But it's fun and something to pass the time. He doesn't intend to actually show them to anyone, so they're just something to do.
Some people do crosswords.
He would go outside, but ... you know. Loss.
(But if one of you lovely people would be willing to take a walk, he'd very much appreciate it. Think of him as a puppy, but with better conversation.)
