[Adachi rarely expected visitors so the knock startles him somewhat. He makes his way over to the door, wondering just who it could be and how he should shoo them away if it's someone he doesn't want to see.
He's surprised when he finds it's Nanako though, so surprised that for a few seconds he says nothing and simply stares at her.
That thankfully does not last long. In a blink there's a smile on his face.]
Oh! Hey there, Nanako-chan! What're you doing all the way up here?
[oh crap. He might not be the most observant or considerate of Feelings, but he could usually tell when something was up with Nanako at least, whenever her dad was too busy to notice her or her big bro had his eyes away for just a moment. When she wasn't eating, when seeing her father (he assumes it was her father in those memories anyway) come home late and drunk bothered her...
Taking note of all that, the smile dropped from his face and he tried to be as gentle as he could]
Do you want to come in to tell me about it? [he smiles again] I promise nothing in my room bites... Oh and I don't bite either. [...wait.] Anymore.
[WELCOME TO MY PARLOR SAID THE SPIDER TO THE FLY okay no it's not like that at all ffhkfhgdghhklg
He's honestly a little surprised that she agreed but today feels like it'll just be full of surprises. He opens the door more for her to come in, closes it once she's in and then turns around to tidy up a bit.]
Sorry, my place is kind of a mess... [at least he finally got rid of all the destroyed junk from when the first gens trashed anything though... out the window but still. The room itself has been altered to look like Adachi's old apartment... but not his one from Inaba. The one he had in the city before his transfer. He felt like that would be easier to go back to living in (although it really wasn't...)]
Take a seat anywhere you want. Do you uhh... want anything? [THAT'S WHAT YOU SAY TO GUESTS RIGHT...?
Actually... wasn't there something more important to make sure of first?]
Oh yeah... does your dad know you're here? [BECAUSE OH BOY DOJIMA COULD BE TROUBLE WITH A CAPITAL T RIGHT NOW...]
[she shakes her head at his offer and sits down... until he makes that last comment, it means all semblance of eye contact is gone and she's looking down at her hands]
[hnnnnnng, she looks back up at him. She doesn't know a lot about Adachi forgetting Dojima, she just assumed they didn't talk because her Dad was mad. She's not even sure if he'll care, but... her gut says she's doing the right thing]
[Adachi hadn't been looking at her at the time, he'd been trying to clean up the kitchen area (cooking in the kitchen wasn't private enough for him sometimes, a man just wants to cook cabbage in peace!). He paused though and turned back to her after that "um," a collection of gathered dishes in his hands hovering over a small wash bin.]
[After the next thing she says though they're no longer in his hands. They slip from his now slack grip and crash loudly against plastic. But Adachi doesn't react. He just stares at Nanako, any traces of a smile gone.]
[Adachi looks away, hands now on the counter to support himself. He stares at the wash bin, observing how half of the dishes made it out okay, but a good number were cracked, or worse, broken completely. He stared at them for a good moment; there was no way to fix them.
Just like there was now no way to fix all his broken memories. Not anymore.
He didn't think he'd care if Dojima left. He thought that was what he wanted. No more worrying about the awkward confrontations, no more having to deal with an angry ex-partner, no more punches to the face
( ... )
[she... doesn't know what to make of that reaction and can't decide what she feels... something between pity and discomfort, like she's viewing something private that she shouldn't be here for.
And... screwed up? She doesn't know what he means by that. But it doesn't really feel like something that you're supposed to respond to, or comment on so instead she just looks back down at her feet and starts fidgeting with her hands]
[he places his hands on his face and rubs his eyes] No, don't... you don't have anything to apologize for. [the one who should be sorry was him. For almost killing you, for not being able to remember your father, for showing an unexpected weakness right now in front of you.
He considers standing up but in the end just turns around and sits on the floor with his back against the counter. He looks at Nanako and debates offering an explanation for that little... display. Or maybe just offering his best regards? What's the right thing to do right now when you feel like... this? And have a little girl in the room who probably feels worse than you do because at least she remembered the man.
Finally though he finds he's tired of keeping it a secret and not seeking any kind of help. They're all the other has from their world now he needs... to try harder. Before Nanako disappears too.]
Nanako-chan I... [he ends up laughing again. God he really has no idea what to do in these situations] I actually... don't remember anything about your dad.
[that awkward silence... she wonders if she should leave. Maybe she's intruding-- she knows she almost wanted to be alone earlier. Just as she considers bowing and excusing herself, he reveals what he's thinking about.
His odd laugh puts her more on edge, but it's almost blown away by what he says. He didn't... remember? She's confused for half a second, until she realizes that he's talking about his loss. But people only lose things that are important to them, so what does that mean? It was hard to sort through big ideas like this, people having good and bad within them. But she would sort through it piece by piece, and for now...]
Y-Yeah. [he's running a hand through his hair and smiling sadly. He really shouldn't be dumping all his problems on a little girl right now, but he couldn't help himself. It was all finally starting to come out] The castle just took everything about him away from me. His name, his face, memories, everything.
When he first showed up, he got mad at me. You know how scary it is sometimes when people get mad, right? So I... ran away. The second time he talked to me I was the one who got mad and I closed the journal on him.
He's surprised when he finds it's Nanako though, so surprised that for a few seconds he says nothing and simply stares at her.

[but then she clears her throat and says it at a more normal volume, even though her gaze has turned towards the floor]
He went home.

And now he's gone. And I'm no better off than the way I started. [aside from now having a name and a face]
