I'm not so much defending, because as LJ SUP decided to do it, it was a pretty foolish way to go about it given the existing history between LJ and its userbase ( Read more... )

Thank you Indigo. You covered my thoughts on this much more eloquently than I ever could.

Forgive the cluelessness here, but I don't keep up with LJ as a whole, just the few people on my friends list. I just login to see what you folks are up to and occassionally post to my own LJ. So what is going on here? Are free accounts going away? If you have one it's going to be gone at some point?

No.

Free accounts that were made before the announcement last week are still free, and will remain free.

However, making a new LJ account can only be accomplished as making it a plus account or a paid account. Plus accounts are free, but they have ads on the pages.

You are correct on all counts there.

I share your opinion of myspace.

Now... what will happen to us permanent types, I wonder¿ They are certainly not making any money off of us!

They're not getting a monthly payment from us permanent-account types, but given how much a perm account costs, they've basically already made around 5-10 years' worth of paid account time off of you.

So unless you've been perm for longer than that, they already have the money they'd otherwise make off you this year.

I think maybe his question was, more, "what happens when parity occurs and we're still permanent accountholders, and they're not going to make any more money off us?"

Thanks.

The way I figured it originally, what I paid would cover 5 years if I were still just on the paid account.

So I'll wait a couple.
