ruminative mode: [LJ Dumb] On BasicAccountGate:

I'm not so much defending, because as LJ SUP decided to do it, it was a pretty foolish way to go about it given the existing history between LJ and its userbase ( Read more... )

I dislike the elimination of free accounts, but I can deal with it. Things happen in business, like you said. My beef is the way they announced it, or didn't. That was harder spinning than in my icon. *g*

As for other journaling options, there's Journalfen too, but the owners don't want the influx of fandom as a whole, so it's not a good option for mass-exodus either.

See, that's the other thing. Fandom isn't the only blogging population affected by LJ's actions over the past 10 months. They just make the most noise about it.

And JournalFen wouldn't want nonfans intruding on them anymore than the greater fandom.

Oh, I'm with you there-I think I'm mainly considering fandom at this point because of all the roleplay journals that spring up from it. As far as I know, they're the ones that generate the greatest volume of new ljs per person. So just kinda speculating there.

JournalFen is also 18+ ONLY, you can only get an account if you pay for it or get an invite code from a paid user, open account creation is about as rare over there as the Perm Account sales over here. So definatly not the first choice for a large fandom exodus. And if you are under 18 and they catch you your account will be nuked.

This is a delibrate move on JF's apart they want slow growth since the servers there are not very 'Robust'

I'll be staying here. Since my work blocks LJ, I have looked around for other journaling communities and all of them have pretty much sucked.

Though you missed "opendiary.com"... though maybe it's not worth mentioning. LOL

Personally, I don't like plus accounts. I hate looking at the ads on my page. My pop up blocker might block popups, but i still have to look at the ones on the sides. ick.

Not if you use Firefox.

There's an add on that knocks those right out.

You don't have adblockplus?

I haven't looked today, but last time I looked at an LJ page with ads on it [in February], I just saw blank spaces...

The free accounts were thought of a loss-leader; a certain percentage of free users would upgrade to Plus, Paid, or Perm, and folks on LJ would tell their friends to join LJ too, so they could easily keep in contact, thus increasing the pool of potential subscribers or ad-views.

Yes, exactly.

What they weren't counting on was people making dozens of free journals each. Honestly, they should have done this years ago.

I guess....I've gotten to a point where the ads don't bother me. There are ads all over the place on every other freaking site on the net pretty much. Myspace has them all over.

And since I'm a paid user and enjoy being a paid user (and every time perm accounts are sold I never have enough money at once *sigh*) I don't see the ads, unless I'm just logging in at somewhere away from home. Then after I log in, I don't see them.

GJ has ads, I'm not sure about IJ...I don't like the concept though, it's like Deadjournal, only...crazy-themed instead of morbid.

Thank you for saying what I've been having trouble saying. I may try to come up with something to post later. I don't like the way LJ presented or tried to rationalize this....but most of the things people cry foul about are things that aren't really effecting me right now anyway.

I had a point here...really I did.

Well said, Indigo.

I'm not going until they shut the doors.

I have three accounts... this one, one called booksbynight for my bookselling matters, and one called mikescomics for my partner's and my business.

My personal account is a paid one, gifted to me by a very dear anonymous person, who saw how much of a difference it made in my mental outlook to have a place to express myself after my accident five years ago. SInce then, my LJ has become almost as important a business networking tool as the "business" LJ account.

The booksbynight is a Basic account, and I'll be happy to have it remain so until I can afford to make it a paid one, because the ads that LJ placed on it for the few moments I switched to Plus on it were for Amazon.com, which is not something I want to support, since I'm an independent bookseller. I cross-post most content on the booksbynight blog onto WordPress at Bookseller By Night, and I won't be surprised if they require payment somewhere down the road.

On the other hand, the mikescomics account is a Plus account, reluctantly at first but we wanted to use the K-9 ( ... )
