That is so cool - this is the very first game ever for me so I had to learn a lot. On advice from the peeps on reddit, I just let myself learn as I went along, though I have peeked into the wiki more lately to get further clues. My favorite thing to do is get on my horse, ahem I mean for my Companion-Werewolf-Black Brotherhood-Dragonborn warrior mage to get on her horse with her trusty Vigilance (though I turned him into a husky) and Inigo and Lydia and take off into uncharted territories. I'm bouncing between that, the radiant quests, and the main quest, depending on mood. :) I am now faced with the decision - Imperial or Stormcloak? :) My son says STORMCLOAK. LOL!

LOL, well, if it eases your mind, there is no right choice - they are both terrible factions. The Imperials are all "rule britiannia/yay colonialism!" and the Stormcloaks are all "ukip/'murica first/no foreigners!"

When it comes down to it, the Imperials /did/ try to execute you in the intro. So there's that. And Ulfric /did/ kill the high king in a legal challenge, so he didn't do anything wrong by Skyrim law.

FUS RO DAH!
