Three summers ago, I directed a production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). This production is one of the pieces I am most proud of because its success secured me an eternal spot at The Station Theatre.
While doing this show, I came into the theatre to find my stage manager mopping the floor. This act, the act of mopping, is precisely what I had come in to do. I thanked him and told him that he didn't have to do this.
His response was golden: You're the director. You have too much to do already without mopping the floor.
Ever since, my definition of "stage manager" has included those words. Once a show is in the performance space, the stage manager's job includes all of those things that you, as a director, don't have time to do.
That stage manager has been my stage manager ever since. Twelve shows since then and Paul is always the guy I hire.
Your entry tonight goes into my bookmarks as well.
