i joke with my friends that we won't live to see thirty, but what they don't know is even after years of therapy every so often i write suicide notes, i make little plans when i know i'll be alone. the knife in my drawer keeps me sane.

My best friend spends all her time stoned or drinking or online doing nothing. She almost got fired for smoking pot at work. She hates her actual job and it's killing her self-esteem. She spends a lot of time with people who are younger and dumber than her because they make her feel better about herself and she acts like a slut because she mistakes physical attention for actual caring. She has suicidal tendencies and she has ruined her relationship with her mother, father and stepmother, and sister, all separately. She isn't going to college, isn't saving money, and has no plans for the rest of her life. I'm so scared for her and I don't know what to do about it.

If you wanted advice ... well, I'm going to give you a little bit anyway, because I'm ... well, I'm a busybody like that. Have you tried talking about where she wants to go in life? Not just asking her, and when she says no, just letting it go. Give her suggestions, brainstorm, think about it together as friends. And if she still has no ideas, and is still only drinking and doing drugs, well. Maybe talk to her about how these things make you feel. It's surprising what the opinion of a friend can do to someone's desire to do something.

Sometimes I think I have this huge and retarded internet crush, and sometimes I just think of her as a friend. I think about it a lot and haven't figured it out yet, but I often wonder why I'm thinking about it so hard because I'd never sum up the courage to tell her and I know she'd never feel the same way about me.
