I think I figured it out by myself by age... nine or ten, by just putting various things together. In my family, we have this big book of Christmas stories/poems/carols/letters that we've had for many years, and in it is the Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus letter, which I read and it stuck in the back of my mind that there was the doubt of his existence. I eventually started thinking of the logistics, and one day approached my dad and said, "There's no way this is physically possible for a single person to do. Especially if he's fat. Is Santa Claus real? Be honest." My dad told me that the answer is both yes and no. No, there isn't a person doing all of that every Christmas Eve, but yes, there is magic that happens at Christmastime. The spirit of Santa, whether he's a physical entity or not, exists. To some degree I still believe that. We still do Christmas morning Santa presents in the family, even though I know it's my dad who got them. It's just a

My parents never tried to actually have me believe Santa was real. We still used the idea, though; still labeled presents as being from him and left out milk and cookies. It was just a game, one that everyone played along with, even across the world. Which is, essentially, what it is. I enjoyed it a lot
