Funny enough, I was thinking of a similar thing in reading James Herriot's oeuvre the last couple of weeks. It's interesting to see that he was clearly a liberal for his time, but is at the same time completely terrifyingly willing to drive hideously drunk, and there are some very funny things in his descriptions of women whose character we are not to like. I've been thinking of a post on it, I think you've inspired me to do some digging. :D
