technical query *looks hopeful*

I'm having problems importing some .wav files into Audacity. I don't know why- the files recorded on one of my digital voice recorder import fine, but when I try to import the ones recorded on the other, I get the error message that 'Audacity cannot recognise the type of this file', even though it's a .wav, just like the other files...

Hmm.

Can you tell me what make and model your two digital voice recorders are?

It may be that if one is Sony for example that it has a proprietary file format that it is just calling .wav which will need to be exported using Sony software (usually downloadable).

One of them was a Samsung or Olympus, (it was borrowed so I don't have the model number), and the recordings from that work fine.

The one that's problematic is a Mikomi ET-858.

We use Olympuses at work and they're great no nasty DRMed software or anything.

It looks like the Mikomi recorders are some cheap Japanese brand with dodgy manuals and software doesn't seem to be easily downloadable.

I suspect you'll need to try and convert the files using some other program as mentioned below.

It might just be Audacity being a bastard. Because it is. An utter, utter bastard.

Try converting them from .wav to .wav (or any other available format of your choice) with WinFF. Audacity can definitely read .wav files converted in this manner.

It's not the most intuitive tool to use, I'm afraid. You get what you pay for, and pay for what you get :-)

Some digital recorders use a low bit-rate format that many players don't recognise. There might be conversion tools by the maker of the recorder or others.
