the first time kyuhyun meets donghae, he doesn't see the boy that everyone at sm entertainment does.

his smile is crooked, his eyes scrunch up when he's happy, he's immature, his singing isn't rich or polished, his words are clumsy, his thoughts are naive, and he trips over his own pants trying to greet him.

he's perfect.

kyuhyun is blown away.

"i'm donghae," he says, immediately giving kyuhyun a big hug as though they're familiar with each other. "nice to meet you!"

a smile finds its way across kyuhyun's face and he hesitantly wraps his arms around the other.

"kyuhyun."

-

winters in seoul are pretty unforgiving. the wind cuts through your skin and leaves you breathless.

kyuhyun dresses sparsely, just a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and jeans adorning his body. he shivers as he and the rest of super junior walk outside from a well-deserved meal at two am in the morning. donghae walks beside him with that smile on his face while looking up at the sky.

"isn't it pretty, kyu?" donghae's voice quietly rings between the two of them.

kyuhyun, who is busy trying to warm himself up, looks over to his hyung and pauses. he sees concern flash across donghae's face before disappearing.

"are you okay?" the dancer asks him before toying with his own jacket. "are you cold?"

the stubborn magnae shakes his head in refusal to the underlying offer.

donghae shoots him a knowing smile before stepping closer to him and lifting his arms to wrap them around kyuhyun's body.

"warm now?"

kyuhyun feels donghae's warm breath tickle his neck and loses all train of thought, feeling as if he's short of breath. it's the wind, he thinks, even though he knows it's not.

"um, hyung, you can let go of me now."

his breath hitches when he feels donghae chuckle against his neck before letting go, a small pang of disappointment coursing through his veins. when he sees the sparkle of amusement in donghae's eyes, his breath is taken away. he blames the cold.

"you never were one for pda, kyuhyun."

-

when kyuhyun first wakes up from the accident, he is greeted by a sleeping donghae in the chair next to his hospital bed, whose hand is also holding his.

he shifts a little, sore and in pain and just wanting to go home, but he doesn't let go of donghae's hand in fear of waking him up (and also because he likes it, which he would never admit). normally he would wake up his hyung, but he sees that donghae seems like he hasn't slept in weeks, so he lets him sleep. his eyes look around the hospital room, drinking in every centimeter of white around him.

"you're awake."

kyuhyun jerks his head in donghae's direction before a wince leaves his lips. now that he's turned to donghae's gaze, he seems he cannot break the gravitational pull of it. he also cannot find it in him to speak, witty remark or else, so he keeps silent.

"you're alive."

kyuhyun hears the shock and relief in donghae's voice, both simultaneous, before silently shifting his gaze downward at their locked hands. he feels donghae try to wiggle his own away, but with the shake of his head, donghae stops trying to break their grip.

"i'll call the nurse!" donghae suddenly blurts out, worry and anxiety painted all over his face. "you stay here, kyuhyun!"

i can't exactly go anywhere, kyuhyun wants to retort, but his lips are dry and his voice is gone.

-

a few days later, he and donghae are alone in the hospital room. donghae babbles on about something that sounds just as ridiculous as his belief in aliens, but kyuhyun just smiles and keeps his hand in donghae's.
