50stories Theme 002: #007 Can You Keep a Secret by Utada Hikaru.
Saga lies in bed awake that night - as he'd always been for a number of times now. He's been having a hard time sleeping since the same question keeps popping in his head over and over like a broken record on repeat - which makes the whole process endless and irritating.
Dear heart, why him?
He tosses himself to the other side of the bed, only to get asked by the same question he can't answer.
Not that he's a stranger to the person involved, they're far from that - they've known each other for years - and they're friends, good friends. And bandmates too, so not only do they hang out together, they work together as well.
Saga springs up from the bed, thinking about it and not coming up with an answer will just end up with him in front of the mirror with the makeup artist complaining how he doesnt take care of his skin and that Saga should be thankful she can work miracles on the dark circles she refuses to address as eye bags but as eye luggages. And Saga doesn't want to hear all that because one, she gets all conceited and two, Saga ends up with a pile of concealer he can hardly move his face at times since the makeup is too heavy for his muscles to carry.
He steps outside the bedroom and into the small living room of the hotel room he currently occupies. He hates when their management decides to go all-star on them. Not that they're a small band who deserves less; but hey, it gets lonely at the top. Literally. Their band and their staff are currently occupying the whole 8th floor of a hotel in Nagoya - they ended up having 5 separate hotel rooms for all the members and 2 rooms for the whole staff.
Saga returns to his room and takes his wallet, key-card, lighter, and a pack of cigarettes. He steps out of the room again to take his coat lying on the couch and puts on a pair of gloves.
If only it wouldn't seem obvious that he's about to run away, Saga would have gone back to his room, pretend to forget something and pretend he didn't see the person bugging his head - and heart - but the sound of the door locking itself behind him prevented him from doing so.
"Can't sleep?" Tora asks as he closes the door of his hotel room - adjacent to Saga's - behind him.
"For nights now." was what Saga wanted to say but he opted for a nod and a smile. He's never been nervous around Tora. He shouldn't ever be. They've known each other for five years, but ever since he started recognizing the "not-so-alien-feeling-but-is-an-alien-feeling-towards-Tora" he just starts to become nervous when he's near and alone with him.
"Going somewhere?" Tora asks as he casually fixes his jacket and placing his own key-card and wallet in his back pockets.
"I... I might grab a beer. Or coffee. Whatever I see first, and a walk. I need a walk." Saga tells him as he stands awkwardly by his door.
"I see." Tora lights up a cigarette - it's a non-smoking floor, but hey they're rockstars and the hotel staff will just have to deal with it with their managers.
"Mind if I join you? Can't sleep either."
"S - sure." Saga's a little apprehensive. He's trying to run away from his thoughts of Tora and now he's going with him - in the flesh - not that he really left him mentally either, so Saga just lets this night be more torturing on his part.
"So I guess we'll be grabbing coffee or a beer. Whatever you see first." Tora speaks, Saga nods with a pout then answers him, "I guess. That is if you're planning on something else."
"I was planning for a walk. I've been thinking too much lately." Tora tells him.
You're not alone.
They decide not to grab the coffee or beer on the restaurant near the hotel, Tora suggests they can take the walk now and that it's more exciting to know what Saga will see first; the coffeeshop or the bar.
"Kinda cold tonight, don't you think?" Tora asks as he blows hot air to his palms then rubbing them on his face.
"It's the winter season, tiger." Saga tells him, trying to be as casual as he can.
Saga, keep calm, and play it cool.
"Will you lend me a glove? I see you're prepared." Tora asks him eyeing his glove-cladded hands.
"A glove?" Saga raises an eyebrow, Tora looks at his own hands then faces the bassist, "The right glove please."
"You're so weird." Saga tells him but removes his right glove nonetheless then places his now-naked right hand inside his jacket pocket.
"You know there's a reason i asked for your right glove specifically..." Tora speaks as he places his hand inside the glove.
"Coffee or beer?" Saga asks as he points to the coffee shop and bar situated next to one another. "Wait, were you saying something, Tora?"
"Nevermind." Tora tells him, a little sulky. "Choose whatever you want."
Saga thinks for a moment. Coffee will not calm his nerves, not with Tora with him now. Then he thinks of alcohol. Alcohol is never helpful, especially to him. He tends to lose control of his body, what more of his mouth. And again, Tora with him will only make matters worse. Whatever decision he makes.
"Made a choice yet? It's freezing." Tora cuts his thoughts, Saga shakes his head.
"I think I just want to go back to my room." Saga takes a step back when Tora grabs his arm, "We're already out. If you're not up for beer or coffee, let's take this walk longer."
Saga shakes his head, "I dont want to be alone with you right now..." intentional or not, and it's not as if Saga can swallow all those words back, he said it, much to Tora's dismay.
"I'm sorry Tora. I really am. I thought I can play this cool, seems I really can't." Saga gives his arm a sway to release from Tora and he runs back to the hotel, two blocks away. The guitarist gives him time to run before walking casually back to the same hotel; there are still a few people on the street and it will seem really weird for him to run after a guy, he doesn't mind chasing after Saga; he minds looking like he's been picked right out of a cheesy romantic movie.
Saga hears a knock on the door twenty minutes later after he ran back to the confines of his hotel room. He can pretend to be asleep but that's not him. They know that he's a light sleeper and he wakes up even to the sound of a whisper. No wonder he often ended up rooming with Tora before, a number of times actually - Tiger's one heavy sleeper that doesn't make a sound, compared to the other three.
Saga opens up the door to the sight of canned coffee and beer; one gloved hand, the other naked. "I still couldn't decide on what you might want."
The bassist almost feels like crying from the overwhelming feeling that suddenly envelops his heart. He's quite irritated too by the gesture, it only makes him more confused.
"Tora... please..."
"Are you gonna let me freeze here?"
"Tora, the corridor's obviously with a heater." Saga tries to close the door but Tora shields it with his arm.
"Okay, you lack sleep, I get that. Don't be cranky on me, it's not my fault."
"But it is, okay?" Saga tries to close the door again but this time Tora swiftly lets himself inside the room.
"I'm the reason?"
Saga sighs in defeat, awkwardness be damned, if he's gonna admit it to Tora, then fine, let it be now. "I dont know when, but somehow, I ended up liking you, more and more, and eventually... I'm falling in love... I asked myself a thousand times why... why you?"
Tora stares at him in silence, Saga begs.
"Please... just leave Tora."
"Why not me?"
Saga sighs again, in almost a fit of rage but he composes himself, "That's why I can't be alone with you. Don't you know how hard it is to keep a calm face when you're being sweet like that?"
"Saga, look. Calm down." Tora smiles, Saga scrunches his eyebrows. "Tora, it's late. The only way I'll be calming down is by seeing you walk out of this door, and leaving me in peace."
"Listen. Just listen. You're not the only one allowed to talk."
Saga leans on the door behind him, "...Fine. I'm listening."
"Can you keep a secret, Saga?"
Saga shrugs his shoulders, Tora keeps going.
"I've been lacking sleep thinking of you too. Asking the same damn questions you ask every night, tossing and turning, hoping i fall out of bed and I'll get amnesia and I wont have to think of answers that aren't there. Saga, i'm not acting sweet... I just really care for you, more than I did before, years ago."
Saga stays silent, Tora takes it as a cue to continue speaking, "See this glove? I wanted to hold your hand as we walk, so I can still keep you warm without the other glove on. Call me cheesy, but... I kind of... like making excuses to be with you, to touch you, offstage, where we're not supposed to touch because it's part of the business but because we find comfort and warmth just like that."
The bassist keeps quiet and Tora, with the lack of words to say anymore leaves a can of beer and coffee, "You can drink whatever you want, I'm drinking mine in my room. And then sleep. Relax." Tora walks towards the door, Saga doesn't move.
"I'm leaving as you wanted. Please step away from the door."
"What? You think I'm letting you out now with what you just said?" Saga grins, Tora takes the hint.

Author's Notes: This fic is downright messy. Pardon. I lack sleep as well. I really miss writing Tora and Saga, my muse is fed with too much inspiration, the will to write was absent but it's here for now so enjoy this mess.
