"...Close the door."
And I did before taking another step inside my bestfriend's room. The stink of alcohol and nicotine creeps up my nose and it's suffocating.
"Can you breathe in here? How long have you been cooped up inside this garbage dump?" I asked with hands akimbo before taking a plastic bag and picking up empty beer bottles and cigarette boxes.
"Listen, Rui..." He mutters, his voice breaking.
"Hmn?" I kept picking up garbage, but my response is enough to make him continue.
"She left me again."
"Okay. And...?" I come across some torn up pictures of him and Hikari, the girl he's been in love with for years.
"Since you're cleaning up and stuff, can you clear the room with her memories too?" He asks as he buries himself under his blankets. I can hear him crying.
"Oh, Umi. You messed up grown man you..."
"Can you go away for a second? Just throw the trash out and come back here..."
I smirk and sigh, "Sure, darling. Sure." I leave the room with two bags of garbage and goes down to the first floor to dump the trash. My legs surely get exercised enough whenever i come to Umi's apartment when he's a crying mess. It's not good to have a bestfriend living on the 5th floor without an elevator.
I dialled my boyfriend's number, "Hey, Tomo. Yeah, you know how he is when he and Hikari breaks up."
"How long are you staying over with him this time?"
"I dunno. When he's okay and not a snivelling mess?"
"Hahahaha. Alright. You know, sometimes i get jealous when you sleep over at his house that's why i sure am glad he's straight."
I roll my eyes, "Yeah... I'll see you soon, okay?"
"Yeah. I love you."
"You too, Tomo."I hang up the phone and sighs. I've known Umi for years and it's only me who can calm him down when he's in this kind of moment.
"Umi?" I call out when I return to my bestfriend's apartment. "You alive?"
"You fucker." Umi replies, I smile because behind those words, I can hear my bestfriend's slight laughter.
"Brought you lots of sweets. And lots of gore movies."
"Must have seen all of them." Umi tells me, i shrug my shoulders, "Pretty sure you havent. Come on, i've watched every gore movie there are with you, so dont tell me what you've seen and haven't."
Umi covers himself with a blanket, "Not in the mood."
"You mother fucker. You will watch movies with me, and we'll eat lots of sweets until our teeth rot, and we'll drink a lot of coffee so we can stay awake for the whole week." I tell him and grab the blanket away from him, he hisses, and i just laugh.
"You big baby! GET OFF THE BED."
"YES MOTHER! HMPH." Umi grumbles. I watch him lazily put on his slippers and he walks half-awake to the living room. I give him a push and he has to pry me away from his shoulders before he can sit comfortably on the couch.
I turn the tv and dvd on. I sit on an indian position next to him and munches on the junk food i bought. I watch him as he watches the movie with full intent. I ignore the movie and just stare at him, i want to make sure that with every minute that passes by, he's getting better.
"Thank you." He speaks, even without looking at me.
"I'm your bestfriend. It's my role." I smile and turns my gaze back to the movie, "Don't be sad anymore, okay? I know you, you'd move on from here. Or you'll go back to her. Whatever you choose, I'm on your side, okay?"
"Okay. I'll die without you Rui, so really, thank you very much." He speaks again, he still doesn't look at me but i can feel his hand give my own a tight squeeze before releasing it immediately.
"I'll prepare our coffee, alright?" I tell him and i walk fast to the kitchen.
I feel tears run down my cheeks, there they are again.
And I can never tell Umi the tears i've shed for him everytime he calls me out here.
