Author’s notes: Don’t ask me where this came from, when I started writing this page I had no idea where I was going to end. But now that I see the result? It’s not perfect, it’s not all happy, it’s not too angsty. And I like it.
Bad brother
It wasn’t the day for Roy at Ed’s door. But there he was, just standing, looking back at Ed with sad eyes, like he was waiting for a miracle to make it all better. “I need to talk to you.”
“Not now,” Ed responded, almost automatically, just he always did. “I told you, I don’t have the time.”
“Bullshit.”
Ed froze at the word. “What did you just say?” They stared at each other for a little while, and then Ed reminded him, “Your partner just died.”
“That’s why I came here. You’ve been through this before. Maybe you can help me see what I can do for his wife, for his kids…”
It wasn’t in Ed’s character not to help his own brother in a situation like this, no matter what conflicts they had shared in the past. “Come in.” They went to the kitchen, and Roy stood by the fridge with his hands in his pockets, probably waiting for the right words to start a painful conversation.
If only his eyes had not landed on Sophie’s ultrasound scan.
“What’s this?” he asked, his voice broken as he looked at the photo, and the fact that Sophie approached them only made it worse.
“Hello,” she greeted Roy, surprised but glad to see him, and when she noticed the scan, she explained, “Oh, didn’t you know? I’m pregnant.”
Damn it. That was all it took.
Suddenly Roy’s face was white as paper, and his hands were shaking. “I’m gonna have a nephew?”
There was a bit of hesitance in Sophie’s voice when she confirmed, “Yeah…” and immediately, she looked back at Ed. “Eddie, can I talk to you for a sec?”
“Sure,” Ed said, and he knew exactly where she was going.
Right by the stairs, she cornered him and asked, “You haven’t told him?”
“Not yet, I just couldn’t.”
“Eddie…”
She was always right and Ed had to admit it. Taking a deep breath, he rubbed the back of his head. “Ok, ok… I’ll do it now…”
But it was too late to fix what had happened. By the time Ed got back to the kitchen, Roy was already going towards the door.
Ed called, “Hey, Roy, wait!” hoping that maybe his brother would stay.
However, Roy just turned around with eyes full of anger and disappointed. “You know what? If you don’t want me in your life, that’s fine. But I’m that little boy or girl’s uncle and I’m gonna be there for him or her. You gotta deal with that.”
Ed closed his eyes for a moment in an effort to calm himself down. “I didn’t mean to keep it from you. It wasn’t my intention to…”
“It’s never your intention, Ed. But you still always push me away.”
Ed stood by the door and suddenly he felt Sophie’s warm arms around him, keeping him safe, as he watched his brother get into his car and leave.
Sometimes Roy didn’t look like the bad brother at all.
The End.
