I'll play the cynic card and go so far as to say that AIDS is still trying to shake the stigma forced upon it by the religious right, neocons, etc. as being the "gay plague," and that's why it seems to be marginalized when compared to breast cancer.

I would wager on this perception changing over the next few years, though. AIDS awareness has been gaining more [good] exposure and mainstream support.
