Somehow, I can't see the average anime costume fitting in all that well with Jewish tradition... :> What sort of a costume is standard for Purim? Big swords, spikey hair, guns, mecha, schoolgirl outfits and sailor dresses can't be the dress of choice, can they?
You'd be surprised. The 'standard' costume is one of the characters from the story. Esther, Mordechai, King Ahashueros, etc. But any kind of costume is allowed. Purim is a big party holiday. In my synagogue, we had, among other things, Elvis, a pirate, a Ken doll, Josie and the Pussycats, a frog, and a giant camera. Most of the costumes I saw out on the street around Megacon weren't really the usual anime stuff, either. Lots of people with wings, and lots of the 'plainclothes' characters. A couple Luke Skywalkers, goths without number (that's what tipped off the folks that it wasn't for Purim, all the goths... how can that be comfortable walking around in all black in 80+ weather?). Not a fuku or Cloud in sight.
