Do kids in elementary school still flip their calculators upside down and write things like "55378008" on them?
This is kind of the algebraic equivalent of that. I rather like the idea of writing a love letter as a more involved math problem. Or perhaps you could tie someone up with a combination lock, leave them one free hand and a note that says "the combination is the first 5 digit prime in the decimal expansion of π" while you have your way with them.
As for calculator text -- in German you can write "I love you", if I recall correctly from... middle school. But really, TI-83s just overrode all that in high school.
In fact, I have vivid memories of taking pictures of myself holding up my TI with dirty messages written on the screen. I sent these to my geeky internet girlfriend at the time. :-p
