I'm looking into buying a new car, since I don't have one of my own currently and the economy is perfect for buying cars these days because no one wants them. My sister will be getting her license next month so we'll have to start sharing my dad's old Acura that I've been driving for the past year and I'm not sure how much longer that car will ( Read more... )

If you want to test drive a Cobalt, I'll let you drive mine Wednesday morning. :)

The only thing I don't like about the Cobalt are the blind spots - they take a lot of getting used to, especially if you're used to driving a car with big back windows. I suppose that if you got a sedan the windows would be bigger, but my coupe has teeny tiny windows in the back.

I like how it handles - and though it can be slow to get to speed, it drives nicely.

I remember looking into the Fit, but being entirely unimpressed with the actual look of the vehicle. Also, I get somewhere around 32-37 MPG - I have the XFE, though, which is probably a little more expensive.

I would love to test drive your car! It's been a while since I've driven manual though, so hopefully I'm not too sloppy. As far as the blind spots go, I was looking at getting the coupe, so I guess we'll see how that goes. And 32 - 37 mpg isn't bad at all; that's what my dad gets with his Civic and I was looking for something along those lines. The Acura I've been driving uses up so much gas, and I swear, it's not the way I'm driving, because I drive like an old man.

GET THE VERSA!!!! melamine April 20 2009, 09:42:46 UTC
Sorry this is so super long but seriously get the Versa!! Both my husband and I have grown up with Nissans almost all our lives: Both of our moms had 1990 Nissan Sentras when we were kids, his mother gave him her 1993 Nissan Altima in 2004, and my mom recently traded in her 1997 Nissan Altima for a 2007 Nissan Versa after we got our Versa! We even recruited our neighbor next door to get one, and our other neighbor said she will be getting one when she trades in her car! We are Nissan people for life ( ... )

5) One more thing! My husband says he wishes it had a little more horsepower...like 25 more. It could be because he is a gearhead, because I think it's just fine. I thought I read somewhere that the Versa is the most powerful of the economy hatchbacks, but maybe that's me being biased? Or wishful thinking?
6) We have an automatic but my husband did mention when he was playing with a manual Versa he didn't like how "clunky" the shifter felt. I have no idea what that means, but maybe you will?

Thanks for all the input! Sounds like I need to get my ass over to a dealership for a test drive! I'll let you know how I feel about it.

Oh, and I'm really happy to hear about all the stuff you can fit into a hatchback... I am definitely leaning towards a hatchback because in the winter I need to be able to fit my snowboard back there, and I know I'm not done moving around so the bigger the trunk, the better!

In my personal financing class we spent a few days looking at the reliability of cars, and pretty much you're going to win with a Toyota (Scion?) or Honda. Chevys are so sexy and seem to function well, but they aren't designed to work properly past 6 years, which goes to show that they aren't dedicated to reliability like Toyota or Honda. Both are known to last to 300,000 miles, but Nissans are also trusty buggers too.

Thanks! That's pretty much what my parents have been telling me too, that if I buy a Honda I get more for my money because the re-sale value doesn't drop the second you take it off the lot like a Chevy. We've had various Hondas and Toyotas over the years and they've always been good to us (we also have a Lexus and an Acura, their luxury counterparts, and those have never failed to impress either). That's why I'm leaning more towards the Honda Fit, because it's the only brand I know I can rely on. I've never been in a Nissan, and I really don't know much about the Scion; still doing some research.

Actually, you inspired me to look into Toyota since I hadn't thought to check what they're sporting these days and I think I'm in love with the new Toyota Yaris liftback...
