Fanfiction: Master List

Apr 13, 2020 12:17

I decided I wanted a fanfic master list, because all the coolkids have one.

Currently pretty much everything I’ve written for Homestuck fandom is gathered on AO3, so you can just look there. But putting it here lets me gather it all on a single page, as well as add some brief commentary (being untumblr’d, I never really get a chance to talk about ( Read more... )

Yes, good.

God, I owe you so many reviews. I have been bad at keeping up communication over the internet these past few months. I basically owe you a minimum of 1000 words on why Strider's Edge is one of fandom's best fics and also yes, I have Feelings and Thoughts about how Rose/Kanaya should be written as well and I suspect we are on the same page there.

Well, I would treasure those 1000 words in my heart, because I have mad respect yo for your views on fic generally; you are always accurate and fair and I take your opinions very seriously. But there's no rush!

And oh, Rose and Kanaya. Yes, I think we probably are on the same page, because as I told Taz the other day I basically see them the way Promstuck sees them. Rose is probably the single character I get most shirty about when she's mischaracterised, and the worst thing of all is when people drive a bus over her sense of humour. She is the funniest character in Homestuck. This is an important point. (We can jam about this any time you like; I'll bring the gin, you bring the tonic.)

I attribute fandom's dismal performance with Rose/Kanaya (in terms of characterization, I mean; undoubtedly they are the best written in general of the popular pairings) to:

a) On charitable days, the fact that people might not be clever enough to reproduce the snap, pop and subtle knives and sarcasm in their canon dialogue.

b) On a less than charitable day: the fact that people have no idea what the fuck to do when given a complex female character. People get Dave's existential angst, but not Rose's. People flat out don't understand that Kanaya is passive aggressive and tends to have a smug sense of superiority. Often, her biggest fans flanderize her direly.

BUT MY RANT ABOUT HOW FANDOM IS ASININE RE: P. MUCH EVERY SINGLE FEMALE CHARACTER IN HOMESTUCK IS FOR ANOTHER DAY which means whenever you want to hear some incoherent feminist arm flailing.

You can imagine essentially a repeat of Ceph's comment, here. I owe you so many reviews.

Including some on little snippets of things, like how far we've come, which I absolutely adore and haven't said anything about ever.

As above also: I would read anything you had to say with the greatest care and attention, and be very grateful for it. You are rad, Linden.

Oh man are we having paraTactician/Strider's Edge appreciation hour and nobody invited me--I probably couldn't give you a thousand words like Jenn could (I am not that eloquent!), but let it be known that I read SE in two marathon sittings (this fic made me late for work); and spent the whole time 1) flailing and wailing in poor Linden's general direction (30%) 2) cajoling everyone I know into reading it (15%), and 3) staring at the screen in mute appreciation and awe (the rest of the percents, plus like ten extra for emphasis).

So, I. Felt like I should say that. In a place that makes me less nervous than leaving proper, buttoned-up reviews on AO3 does.

And while we're here, would you mind

sharing

those Strong Feelings on Rose, for I am as a babe in the woods and your thoughts on Dave and Terezi were so helpful

I am terribly flattered by this, thankyou. :-)

And ohhh dear. You do not really want me to talk about Rose because I will go on for fucking hours.

However! Since you asked, here is the number one rule for writing Rose which I try always to keep in mind:

Rose Lalonde is smarter than you.By you, obviously, I mean me, or whoever's currently writing her. If you are writing Rose she is already ahead of you. It doesn't matter how smart you are; she's smarter. This doesn't mean she can't do really stupid things, because it's usually the smartest people who do the stupidest things, but the point is that if you the author can outthink her, something is wrong ( ... )
