I like the nail polish idea since I always think how I should buy those colored key covers for my apartment keys, but then never do. (my key to the building and my key to my room look exactly the same except for the numbers written on them.
Unfortunately, I have to return the keys when I move out, and the landlord might not be so happy with the color coding. I suppose I could take the color off, but I wouldn't want to worry about possibly returning messed up keys.

I've done that one, but with just small dots instead of coloring the entire key base. A cotton ball with nail polish remover takes it right off.
