Saying Goodbye to the Light
Did you wish...?
It was times like this when no one should be awake. It was times like this when no one should have their eyes open. It was times like this when the witches and vampires would come out and steal souls and blood. The clock struck midnight as a pair of bare feet plodded upon the linoleum floor of the kitchen. On the third chime, a pale hand reached for the handle of a kitchen knife and held it firmly.
Red liquid drops fell on to the kitchen’s black and white diner-like linoleum floor. And with it came smaller drops of water. In the silence of the witching hour, in the darkness of that kitchen nook, a naked girl held her weeping self: a single deep gash against the pale underside of her forearm. It was times like this when people said goodbye to the light.
She smiled dryly at the mirror. Every morning, it was the same old thing: how she would put on the façade of a normal, happy girl and try to fit it with the rest of the world. Even her name did not sound like anything unique. Her hairstyle was plain and there was nothing special about her face or what she wore. Perhaps her skin may be paler than most others, but that wasn’t enough to make her stick out. Overall, she was nothing but a normal person by most standards.
Everyday, she would walk to her school following the same old route she had followed for years. And during all those days, nothing special had ever happened. But today, something different would come up. It was on a bill posted on the wall of a shop: “Experimental pill to change your life! For those interested, please contact this number…” Immediately, she took the flier and stuffed it into her bag.
As soon as she returned back home for the day, she grabbed the phone and called the number on the flier. Immediately, she heard a deep man’s voice asking her if she was interested in the experimental pill. Of course, the girl excitedly offered to be a guinea pig to this project. The man, with this glee in his deep voice, told her the place where the experiment will be held. She recognized the address: it was an old house most people thought was abandoned. But, she held no suspicion. As she ended the call, she looked back on the scab that ran across her forearm: she would be having a better life soon.
The next day, she visited that house. She was offered a small black pill and was told to take it before she went to bed. Obediently, she kept the instructions in her head. The black pill did not spark any curiosity in her. All that ran through her head was the excitement that she was about to enter a new life.
That night, she took the pill and excitedly got into bed. In all her excitement, it was hard to close her eyes, but she forced herself to do so. And as she fell into slumber, she dreamed of the various lives she could lead.
One by one, the memories in her mind vanished and her breath began to still. This is the new life, she thought. Her body was slowly fading and soon, she ceased to exist. In the morning, she would open her eyes and she shall be called Fawn.
