Summary:
Kyuhyun never thought 'love' was supposed to be easy.
He'd always been curious about it, actually - not as though he would ever admit it. Watching the four seasons pass, every time, there was some form of 'love' present. It was sometimes impossible to miss, or even such a subtle detail, you would need to settle your eyes upon it for at least a few seconds. Couples: holding hands in the snow, sharing umbrellas in the rain, with piggyback rides on a day of laughter, strolling over crunching leaves.
In a way, he missed it. But that was impossible.
You can't miss what you never had.
~~~
There wasn't anything peaceful about note-taking in class.
There was something peaceful, however, about the weather outside. For now. The weather was scheduled to switch over into a pouring rain by the time classes were finished for the day -- But hey, aren't the weathermen wrong once in a while?
Sungmin was working, but half the things the professor was murmuring went in one ear and out the other. Though this would be his 46th year of teaching, the constantly monotonous rumble was nearly impossible to learn by. Oh, well. As long as he looked like he was gaining something out of it - amongst his randoms scribbles, there actually were some scraps of useful information! He could always 'compare' with Wookie, anyway, just to check if he 'accidentally missed something.'
A sunbeam slid over his fingertips, and he turned his head back towards the classroom's windows. His assigned seat was placed by the entrance door, being the darkest corner of the room. Of course, this didn't bother him greatly - but it would've been nice if he had sat somewhere more often struck by light, like Kyuhyun's spot, for example.
That boy... Sungmin heard more rumors than he should've about him, Cho Kyuhyun, ever since he transferred in two weeks ago. It was strange how quickly word of him spread - like wildfire. The fact Kyuhyun never responded to any of it just fed the rumormongers more and more. It wasn't long until Sungmin suspected he liked the attention. Underneath that cold, uncaring, 'say-what-you-will' act of indifference, Sungmin knew there was a conniving, cutthroat, narcissistic bastard. He knew.
Okay, so he didn't actually know.
But it would be cool... Right?
~~~
Kyuhyun lifted his head to copy what was left on the review page, and set down his pen. The rest of the class was still halfway through the third paragraph. ‘So slow,’ Kyuhyun thought. 'Don't they know they should just note the main points? Writing the full sentence is just a waste of their time,' He leaned back in his chair, folding his arms triumphantly. His expression remained blank, however; impatient even. Scanning the room for nothing in particular, he simply observed the other students with their eyes trained on the teacher, slackjawed. Their expressions alone made him question their intelligence. Even as the class' youngest, he felt he should be judged as 'hyung,' based on intellect...
Sitting at the back of the class had its advantages. No one could see his silent scoff.
All except one; Lee Sungmin.
Shit.
Skipping a grade was no problem. Moving into the top classes even after a school transfer was no problem. Attending to his grades was never a problem.
Making friends, avoiding enemies, and ducking under 'scandals'... was a problem.
Lee Sungmin was, despite being a total girl, rather popular in his year. He had friends, acquaintances, cohorts, all of the above - EVERYWHERE. Even someone he'd never learned the name of wouldn't be afraid to greet him a 'good morning.'
Just as soon as Kyuhyun thought the rumors would stop...
Damn it.
Kyuhyun would bet that Sungmin is as popular as he is because he's either lived here for his entire life, or he's some kind of hyperactive social butterfly. That might sound redundant, but whatever. Chances are that it's probably both options.
So now he's seen him smirk, and 'Emotionless Kyuhyun' is destroyed, and 'God, that Cho Kyuhyun must be an ass, I heard he smirked in class at his hyungs!' will be heard everywhere.
‘...Cho Kyuhyun, do you have any idea how ridiculous you're sounding?’ Fuck.
He... He wouldn't do anything, anyway. He couldn't. That Lee Sungmin is such a pansy-
‘Why is he smiling at me?’
~~~
The way the sun shone made Sungmin completely forget about the forecasted storm - until a cloud pushed its way to the front, blocking the rays for a brief moment. That was enough to sweep Sungmin's broad grin into a concentrated pout, lowering his eyes... just to land them on Kyuhyun, seated right below the window.
‘Is he laughing at someone? Aha! so he is evil inside!’ Although excited for his seemingly correct prediction, he couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed. Sungmin hadn't known anyone completely mean just for the sake of being mean. After all, Heechul is just a little bitter!
Sungmin almost missed Kyuhyun's change in face: Kyuhyun's eyes grew large and his body stiffened, looking as if he was holding his breath, too.
Uh-oh. Had he caught Sungmin glancing at him...? But, wait. Why 'uh-oh'? Why should it matter? Why would he even-
THWAK.
Sungmin's complexion wavered indefinitely in a matter of seconds. He first paled when he noticed the steady glare the teacher had been boring into the back of his head - even more so when a small paperback dictionary hit him square. He flipped around in his seat to face front, turning pink at the unexpected punishment, and soon flushing at the unnecessary attention. The professor allowed the class their few seconds of snickers and giggles, tied with Sungmin's long hour of embarrassment.
If Kyuhyun hadn't been laughing earlier, he definitely would be now.
Sungmin couldn't bring himself to check.
~~~
The rushing din made it to the hollow of Kyuhyun's head, breaking him from his trance. He groaned softly, ashamed for letting his conscience drift away like that.
So what happened?
Soundlessly and to himself, he narrated, ‘And all Kyuhyun knew from then on was some event had caused Lee Sungmin to dip his head into the desk, while carrying a...’ He didn't want to continue. Any word for 'blush' he knew at the moment was too...
Maybe he would check his thesaurus later, if he remembered. If he could find some scientific word for it, the better! Nothing romantic in the slightest.
Not like 'blush' was really a romantic word in the first place.
Anyway.
Anyway! He didn't really want to settle for not knowing. It was his class that suddenly bonded over a simple instance he missed! And so they would all be joking around something they knew, and he didn't, without him, when-
‘Since when does Cho Kyuhyun care about the affairs of others?’ he reminded himself, skeptically.
~~~
'Note-taking' flew out the window. "Along with my dignity," Sungmin inwardly commented. There was no possible way for Sungmin to look up without being reminded of what just happened seconds ago. In some mere seconds, he told himself he would buckle down and get over it, so he could get straight to work!
Those mere seconds turned into mere minutes, and soon enough Sungmin was out of an excuse, and out of notes.
But... Wookie would understand, wouldn't he?
