I use anything-flat-that's-to-hand for a bookmark, myself. Frequently blow-in cards from magazines, paper napkins, paper straw wrappers, and corners torn from newspaper pages.

My friend Cindy-the-librarian once did a display case display at the central library in Austin, of things she had found in returned books that had apparently been used as bookmarks. The expected photographs, utility bills, old love letters, of course, but also Sweet-n-Low packets, shoe insoles, ancient computer punch cards, gift wrap, guitar strings... (and a few items that good taste prevented her from displaying...)

I know I haven't said hello in a while, but I've been thinking of you. Hope all is well.
