Now, instead of working...to continue with the first-line memes, here are some classic first-lines. I've tried to avoid ones which 'give it away' - so no, there is no Pride and Prejudice here! As a hint, these are all books I read while growing up (though they aren't all child's lit) and all of them can be found on Gutenberg (so if you haven't read

Sadly, the only one I recognized was #2.

But the popularity of #2 is interesting to me - I must admit, I had to look it up myself, and I don't think I would remember it off hand... well, except for the name. Perhaps that's the trick to it.

Yeah, for me it was the name that gave it away. First I just thought that it was one of that series, then I realized that Little Women was the only one where Jo was young enough to be likely to make a statement like that.

Edit: I wrote 3 originally, not 9... no idea why.

Interesting - I guessed 1, 2, 5 and 10. I have not seen this meme before.
