"Okay, fair enough - Extremely pleased. Let me say upfront that I was petrified that this wasn't going to work. That we would try our hardest, and sheepishly sulk off to KFC to finish dinner on our own terms. There's also, a bit of a risk getting together a group of people who don't all know each other, though I had guessed the event itself was rather self-selecting, it was a good day in the way of making new friends as well. The fact that my head already - as of 11 o'clock that morning - started turning towards another dinner... well, we'll see how that goes for the future! Thanks to you all :)"
Thank you for organizing everything! It was tons of fun, and another dinner is a must!
"Ladies and Gent, I was thinking of posting a notice about our experience to one of the general interest Patrick O'Brian communities, if that's okay with you all"
Wandering here via elwe... I wasn't able to find Gooseberries - or anyone who had heard of them before. My grandma used to have gooseberries in her back yard, when I was little. If I remember correctly, they're a bit paler than green grapes, and they have quite visible veins. They're fairly round, and around the size of large blueberries or a bit bigger, and they taste quite tart.
Wow! What a brilliant idea, and what an effort you must have gone to with research, cooking and all. I'm glad that it turned out so well. I wonder whether weevils are actually beneficial to hard tack, by decreasing the amount one has to bite through? Was much amused by the difficulty in obtaining a pudding basin, having never previously thought of these as obscure kitchen objects, but that’s cultural difference :) (Likewise gooseberries; they come in tart or sweet varieties, on quite thorny stems, freeze beautifully, and are gorgeous)
You make me feel that re-creating the anniversary dinner from Babette’s Feast might not be quite so impossible after all.
