I want to illustrate the shift in rock music from hair metal (86-90) to grunge/ alt rock (91-95) with songs in a playlist

For the hair metal side, you got lots to choose from.
Warrant - Cherry Pie
Great White - Once Bitten Twice Shy
Winger - Seventeen
Poison - Every Rose Has It's Thorn
Europe - The Final Countdown
Quiet Riot - Come On Feel The Noise
White Lion - When The Children Cry

Counter these with stuff like this:
Anything from Pearl Jam (Jeremy, etc)
Nirvana (anything from In Utero)
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
Alice in Chains - Man in a Box
Radiohead - Creep
Beck - Loser
Collective Soul - Shine

These are just off the top of my head. Should illustrate how things went from a party atmosphere to staring at your shoes. ;)
