Last Saturday while checking on one of my nephews I took a little spill and twisted my right foot (my house has one of those one step difference between the kitchen and the family room).
As soon as it happened I knew I was in trouble. I hoped I was wrong - the last thing I needed at that point was to be off my feet for a few days never mind a few weeks. Not with my sister and her kids there. Nephew chasing is hard enough when with two good feet - but when I can’t bear weight on one foot? Forget it. One of my nephews seemed to realize that I wasn’t up to our usually “chase nephew” game - and that the best I could do was yell out and alert Mommy and Grandma. The other one didn’t really seem to care. As long as I could read him stories he was fine with whatever else I did.
My niece’s reaction was the most interesting. She is four and half. At first she was scared (she saw me fall and I think saw the look of pain that must have been on face) but later when my sister, mother and I where chatting about what to do she went and got me her Cookie Monster and blanket to help me “be brave”.
The Prompt Medical care place I went to didn’t help much - they didn’t have an X-ray (or maybe they had the machine but didn’t have tech there for weekends) and my foot had swelled up so they couldn’t really feel to see if there was small break. I did get some pain meds which helped for a few days. On Monday my mother took me down to the ER to get an X ray.
The X-rays showed that I had broken my fifth metatarsal. After being in a splint for a few days the orthopedist said that I don’t a cast. Just stiff soled shoes (sneakers) and for an ace bandage at night. And that I should use the crutches I had (from when my mother did this same thing about six years ago) for a while until I feel I can bear weight on it.
As long as I don’t walk on it the pain is tolerable. (It comes and goes) The worst part is that as this is my right foot, I can’t really go anyplace on my own because I can’t drive. It has only been few days but I am already starting to go a bit stir crazy.
