DW Packing was never fun, but it was especially irritating when there was somewhere Kihyun wanted to be. He had a list, Hoseok had written it out for him, and it wasn't like it was hard. But for some reason it was making him a little crazy. He wanted to sit on the floor and throw a tantrum like a child. But he couldn't. Hoseok was at work and as soon as he got home, they'd head to the airport.
Kihyun threw the paper onto the bed and walked across the room of their flat to look out the window. They'd lived in Manhattan for almost seven years. Twelve after he'd been discharged, Kihyun had moved back in with Hoseok. It was the same flat they'd lived in prior to enlistment, that he'd stayed at when his parents hadn't wanted to see him. It only took twelve hours for his parents to drive him out again, he'd given them that much time but it turned out they'd hoped the military would've, Kihyun didn't know, cure him of being gay? He didn't want to know. So he immediately packed up everything that wasn't already in his flat with Hoseok and moved out and back in.
It wasn't like he was going to stay with his parents, but he'd hoped that maybe, this time, something would be different. It wasn't, of course. It never was. And so, a mere four weeks after discharge, Kihyun and Hoseok moved again. This time they moved from Seoul to New York City.
The first year had been the hardest, neither of them had adequate English skills for everyday life. But as each year passed, things had gotten easier. But now ... they were going back to Korea for the first time. No, Kihyun thought. Hoseok had gone back a few times to see his family, but Kihyun hadn't. It was cheaper for one of them to go and Hoseok's family, though they loved Kihyun, understood. They, in turn, came to New York at least once a year, usually at Christmas. Hoseok would go home over Chuseok.
But this year ... This year they were both going home, and not for a holiday. Kihyun's brother's wife had a baby and they wanted Kihyun home for the first birthday celebration. Kihyun's parents hadn't called, it had been his brother. Kihyun's brother who had come to visit him in New York. Kihyun's brother who had said even if he didn't agree with Kihyun's lifestyle, he would never forget his brother. Kihyun's brother who's wife had helped him see sense. Kihyun's brother who now embraced Hoseok without reservation.
And so as excited as he was to finally go back to Korean, he was scared. He didn't know what he was going to face. But now that he'd talked the whole thing out in his head, he felt he could pack. And so he did. Finishing only an hour before Hoseok came home from work. They were ready, and even if they weren't, they had nothing to lose. They had each other and their life in New York. It would be waiting for them, it would wait for them.
