It's a hell of a story and a hell of a production. Of course it's a stylized version of the Count of Monte Cristo, so if you want to see another version of the story you could read/watch that as well and not have to spend as much time.
The difference (If I remember correctly) is that in Gankutsuou, the story is told from a separate perspective. In the Count of Monte Cristo, the story is told from the Count's perspective, where Gankutsuou is told from the perspective of the boy (can't remember his name). So even though a large amount of inspiration is drawn from the original story, it's still a work that stands on its own (especially since they made it into a Space Opera).
Haha, definitely. Wasn't there a Count of Monte Cristo movie out awhile back? I know I watched a movie about it. So I knew the general gist, but not all the details. So it was cool to watch this interpretation and be completely surprised by things :)
GOSH its so pretty. Parts of me wail at the utter impossibility of making the costumes, but other parts.....want them so bad XD
