i think that i should just stop reading reviews for records or live shows. i tell myself i seek them out just to see what people think of the album or show in general, but really i think that i do it so i can read a review that parallel to what i think ( Read more... )

here's my opinion pinksparklz June 15 2005, 20:50:39 UTC
I would love it if everyone could express their opinions without it affecting another person. I really don't like it when people have elitist attitudes so I try real hard not to.

I don't always win that battle, however. I still get irritated by superficial music/art lovers. I find it easy to build a little box for my thoughts to sit in and get snobby about and wouldn't you know I'm no better than a hobo sitting in my box.

yes, what makes my ears sensitive and pained by music other people love? what would we do without variety?

having an opinion on music is always a good thing. but yes.. i can understand as to where you might get irritated. i would to. moral of the story.. music review people are dumb. i think thats what u were getting at. altho, i didnt read all of it. there was way much. i read everyother paragraph starting with the first; good writing tho, i was almost tempted to read the rest.

Maybe you should have said: "Oh GOD. Thank you for the human brain." Just a thought.

I liked your statement (or your friends' statement): "when he was around sincere people, he felt cynical, and when he was around cynical people, he felt sincere..." My wife and I have talked about the very same thing. Everytime we go to someone's home we leave thinking they are either sloppy housekeepers, or overly clean. Basically, we feel we're the middle ground. It's the same with everything else: I bet your friend feels he is the perfect balance between cynicism and sincerity, that's why he acts the way he does. So, when he's around someone who's even slightly more cynical than he, he thinks: "Man, that guy is just too cynical".

we were thinking about having your family over sometimes soon, but now it's all about neutral ground. ha

i appreciate your thoughts on people feeling completely moderate. i hadn't really thought of it that way before, but i think you're spot on.

how very insightful!
reminds me of 2 corinthians 8:14, "...in order that their surplus might also come to offset your deficiency, that an equalizing might take place."

that is possibly why, i am just thinking outloud, certain people with very different personalities end up together and work very well. it could be very frustrating sometimes to help out a habitual procrastinator if you are a very organized, task-oriented person. but, it's healthy. to whip each other into shape, and likewise, mellow out.

there was that one star trek episode where they encountered an alien race with a culture centered on mathematics. and they didn't really care for music played by humans because it was imperfect mathematically with timing and all that. but they were enraptured by the singing voice of a hologram and one of the aliens designs a hologram that sings things over insane ranges and the compositions are mathematically interesting patterns expressed in sonic form. and it doesn't sound pleasing to humans at all.
that seemed significant.
I wondor what pop music could sound like if it were composed for some other music system that divides octaves differently, would it be possible to get something that still has that feeling pop has?
