Honestly, nothing turns me off more than bad emotional development. And in a romance you would think that would be the meat of the issue.
"Because Chloe's been stringing him along since forever, as all male, non-gay best friends must be in love with the main character, and I would like to have seen him get with some nice girl of his own in a real relationship based on something more than lust."
I remember ranting about that. Why can't writers have guy friends who are not into the main?! I've had male friends who didn't want me that way. I never felt less cute for it.
I wonder, somewhat, if the author was just relying on the romance genre to carry for the lack of actual emotional development. Which never helps.
And, yes, making every male character in love with your female protagonist reads like insecurity. I wouldn't have as much trouble if Chloe weren't as *aware* of his feelings. And it's sad to give up on a friendship, but if she really cared she wouldn't do that to him so consciously.
Yet it's not the first novel to do so. For a genre that claims to be about relationships, many do not. Aparently bwriting sentences just telling the readers they're in love is enough.
Agreed. It's not a good characteristic the fact she can't be friends with a guy. Much less like that.
