Let's talk about checks

Everyone knows to draw a line through to the end of the monetary line on a check. Why do we do it? Well, to prevent fraud, of course. Right? True, the payee could attempt to append something to the end of the spelled-out dollar amount, but this always struck me as difficult and unlikely.
