Are Arizona Government Officials Insane?

May 14, 2010 10:07

The Governor has now signed a bill banning Ethnic Studies at publicly funded schools. No more Black History Month studies, no more studies of the contributions made to Arizona by members of the Latino community. At least in a publicly funded school. Once again I've gotta ask, WTF?

actually, here's what the bill is prohibiting in ethnic studies classes
* Promote the overthrow of the United States government.
* Promote resentment toward a race or class of people.
* Are designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group.
* Advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals
couldn't say I'm against that

What thies said.

Google "Raza studies" and read a few articles. I'll be surprised if you come out of it thinking such classes are a reasonable way to build understanding. From what I can see they are about as unifying as separate entrances and segregated dining areas.

I've read a bit more and am still having some problems with it. I fail to see how studies designed specifically for latino or korean or another ethnic group is a bad thing. Especially when it comes to learning about their cultural heritage. I'm a W.A.S.P. of Scottish heritage. Should I be prevented from taking a class designed specifically to teach me about my Scottish background? And what's wrong with a little Ethnic solidarity when the entire state has just passed a law which basically makes it illegal to look Latino?
