Baroclinic zone stretches from MT through SD, IA, MO, IL, IN, OH, PA, and NJ. The gradient across this zone has strengthened, probably in response to the jet stream above the area. A ridge is in place over the central US while a large closed low is still sitting off the coast of WA. That low has made some slow progress to the northwest. Cyclogenesis happened north of HI. The remnants of Tropical Storm Erin are bringing heavy rain to parts of central and northern TX. An easterly wave is about to reach Florida, but the more significant impact of this wave will be when Hurricane Dean approaches the Gulf of Mexico. Advisories from the National Hurricane Center note that Dean's track past 72 hours depends on how it interacts with that low.
