run your own race. You are running 14 miles at a 16-17 minute pace, while most people are taking 16-17 minutes on the remote to scroll through what's on tv. You're tracking your improvements. You're getting up and out. Picture yourself with the finisher's medal around your neck. It will be some of the most priceless jewelry you own. All the best to you!!!
Just so you know, I am running 10 minute miles and struggling with the exact same thing you are. How come I'm not as fast as everyone else? Tim had to put it to me straight last week and kindly remind me that I'm not everyone else, I don't have everyone else's genes, and that progress is being made. So, I'm telling you the same thing. Where were you 5 years ago? Bet you weren't even considering something as crazy and insane as a marathon. I know you are probably feeling better by now, and especially after kicking it at Bartram, but just know that it's not about how fast you go, rather it's about the journey that took you there.
Oh, and ignore your friend...unfortunately ignorance isn't illegal in this country. :)
