Into the Fold, Chapter Thirty-one

Feb 23, 2010 21:30

I am FINALLY done with Into the Fold. Believe me, there is nobody else on earth who can possibly find that harder to believe than I do, but it is true. I have forty-two chapters total, leaving ten chapters to post after today's, which I'll do about once a week or so. That will give me time to absorb my concluding beta-readers' comments and do ( Read more... )

Aww, man, what a tease! Lol, well only partly a tease. I REALLY wanted to see him start to create the counter curse in this chapter. But you did some really nice things here. I love the way the Healer tells him he has to figure out the emotions behind the spell. That makes TOTAL intuitive sense to me. I like the way you show his emotions rather than imply. I probably would have wallowed in the angst more but that's one of the things I've always liked about your writing -- its economy. You write just what's needed, no more, no less, without letting the prose seem skimpy. Actually your prose tends to come across like a good, satisfying meal. Although I STILL wanted to see them actually construct the counter curse. Oh well, more to look forward too ( ... )

Thank you!

It's been a while since I've read the previous chapters so I can't remember if you'd originally put James' put down of Severus in there earlier. But it's devastatingly effective and true. And it's rather poignant and blind of Severus to have spent all those years in Slytherin House and yet it never occurred to him that there's no way he'd be able to get Potter and Black expelled.

James did play this card in Chapter 18, out of a real fear that Snape would expose Remus and get him expelled. And to be honest, I'm not convinced that James was sure he and Sirius were 100% safe--there was some desperation in his gambit.

Playing catch-up here. :) You already know what I think of this chapter from my comments on the file, but I want to reiterate how devastating the confrontation with James is, even in retrospect. I loved that chapter when I first read it, and it loses none of its power in this flashback. And also, I love the way you make the magic your own, through little touches like the Pensieve having a personality. Very effective!
