bandwagon
Dong Bang Shin Ki debuts as five - Junsu, Changmin, Yoochun, Jaejoong, Yunho.
They couldn't be any more different if they tried.
(Jaejoong carries himself with the air of self-importance, brushing off stares in a way Yunho suspects he does on purpose - this lanky, sophisticated creature that might as well be an entirely different species on his own. Like Jaejoong knows he is a class separate from the rest; that five years from now, sixty percent of the female population will claim to have his children and Dong Bang Shin Ki is the next hallyu sensation and Yunho is in love. But he doesn't.)
They are beautiful in a way Yunho will never hope to be. Wonky teeth, mismatched eyes, scars in more places than he can count - the remedy is plastic smiles and a path Yunho refuses to take. He isn't perfect, he's anything but, lacking in both musical ability and the experience to make up for it; this Yunho understands. Yunho wants himself to be known, like anyone does, but talent alone isn't going to take him much farther than that.
So he dances, even if he's still self-conscious and hyperaware of his own body and movements while doing so, lacking the flawless charm the others seem to posses almost by natural instinct, comfortable in every sense of the word.
Like now. Jaejoong watches Yunho move around their shared dorm room with the kind of shameless stare that could burn through skin and sinew and bone, something in his eyes that says he knows he can if he wants to.
Jaejoong tilts his head and smiles quizzically, charming as you please. You think we'll get along?
I don't know, Yunho answers honestly, and Jaejoong just laughs. He ducks his head under the covers, a splash of color against the otherwise ordinary white. Sleep on it, yeah?
(Testing new territories with limited boundaries is different than what they are used to. Jaejoong is a flower boy and like most of them, he is both vain and narcissistic. Yunho can tell this much by sight and lasting first impressions, but one thing is clear.
They are opposite sides of the spectrum, not at all like balancing each other out because it just doesn't work that way for most.
It almost makes it a little too easy to fall in love with someone you are not.)
The next day brings the dawn of new beginnings. Insecurities are worn like a second skin - Yunho feigns nonchalance as Jaejoong stretches arms above his head, eyes sleepy and hair mussed with the touch of morning. He smiles behind shutters.
Today's the big day.
Yunho nods, more than a little apprehensive and trying not to show it. I'm nervous.
Jaejoong smiles wider, eyes pretty and glowing multicolored in the filters of sunlight. Aren't we all? But remember-
Dong Bang Shin Ki debuts as five, but they stand on stage as one.
Yunho is just as awkward as Jaejoong is casual. He radiates confidence, even if he isn't the best dancer in the group but Yunho doesn't think he's ever hated anyone for something as simple as that.
But backstage- backstage, where everyone is hugging each other and there is shouting and cheering and crying, jubilant, we did it, Yunho holds Jaejoong for longer than necessary and yells close to his ear over the din of noise-
new best friend.
(Jaejoong's laughter is like applause. Once he starts, everyone wants to join in.)
