I mean, if NPR put it into its regular news update. During All Things Considered even! Right before news updates about Scooter Libby's trial!
Now, I'm not criticizing NPR for reporting it. They also have reports about upcoming movies, the Oscars, and the Superbowl.
It's just making me wonder about the kind of a world we live in where reports of Anna Nicole Smith's death are this important.
They did refer to her as a "tabloid personality", probably to display their grudging acquiescence to report the news. Or maybe they wanted to, but needed to make themselves look better in their listeners' eyes. According to them, the most important thing she ever did in her life was meet her now-deceased rich husband while working as a stripper. She's been famous for being famous after all.
And much as I've been making a few jokes, snide comments, and speculations, I also feel sorry for her. She came from apparently white trash circumstances, but the kid was making good. She went from stripper to Playboy Playmate to model for Guess, H&M, and Lane Bryant. And models may not always be the prettiest of people on the inside, but believe it or not it does take talent and skill to pose for pictures. She could have had class. She could have been a contender.
And then it all went wrong. *sighs and shakes head*
She was pretty damn young for up and dying so suddenly.
