Outside Pixie Stix Cabin [Saturday, Late Morning]

Jul 31, 2010 19:29

There was something Effy liked about staying up all night. Seeing the day start from what still felt, to her, like the closing of another one. The strangest things appealed to her, and could easily occupy her thoughts like that. For hours, sometimes ( Read more... )

Wesley had just finished packing up for the loathsome three weeks he was to spend at his parents' house, so he was free to sulk for the rest of the day before catching a portal home the next morning. He'd heard that the roof and the campfire were both excellent places to sulk, and he was about to head out to the campfire when he stormed out of the cabin and (fairly commendably) managed to avoid tripping over Effy.

"Oh. Hello."

Always choosing the most awkward place to sit. But it was far more fun that way, and Effy lounged against the vertical bar of the handrail as she looked up at Wes.

"Book boy." Yes, she did remember his actual name. Details. Effy tipped her head in a sort of return greeting, and quirked her lips in a half-smile. "Fancy seeing you here." You know, outside the cabin they shared. There was some irony in her tone.

Yes, book boy. He wasn't sure if that meant that she didn't remember his name or was just making up a nickname, but he didn't want to offend her by correcting her in case she did remember, so he didn't say anything.

And he picked up on the irony in that, but not in her tone. "Yes, outside the cabin we share," he pointed out, thinking he was being clever.

Effy rolled her eyes, and shook her head. Boys were fucking slow catching on to the subtler side of interactions.

"Early for you?" Well, half the guys she'd known didn't wake up until noon, it would point towards an answer to his slow uptake.

"You look chipper," Alex said, bottle of water in hand as he wandered over. Hey, he didn't have anything else to do and she'd pointed out that he could have come to her when they hadn't been speaking.

So, there he was, coming to her.

Making up for time missed. Not something to complain about.

"Maybe I am."

Effy shrugged, letting her head rock back a little as she hung onto this feeling. Chipper. It was rare. An artificial chipper, but what was the harm in that?

"Are you?" Alex asked, leaning on the cabin beside her. "Or are you merely trying to look chipper to lure the less intelligent into your web of lies?"

"Why would I need 'chipper' to do that?" she wondered, turning her toast over in her fingers a couple of times before she took her next bite.

Not like she hadn't drawn people in before, and she hadn't needed to fake perkiness to do it.

Alexander, feeling restless from his searching still leading him no where, was on his way for a mind-clearing traverse in the preserve, but far be it from him to not be kind and sociable to people as he passed by.

He nodded, giving a wave to the girl on the cabin steps. "Hello," he said. "Good morning."

Effy offered up a sort of wave in return, with her toast, watching him walk a few moments longer.

"What makes you think so?" One of those strange, empty greetings, that somehow warranted querying sometimes.

"There's sunshine," Alexander offered with a smile, looking up to the partly cloudy sky. "We're alive, or at least appear to be, and, as far as I can tell, no one has been shrunken or kidnapped or put upon by some evil magician or taken deathly ill or turned into anything unfortunately."

As far as he could tell.

"It'd say that's not too shabby."

Actual reasoning. That was something, and Effy curled a little hazy smile. "Suppose not." She had a tendency to think on the darker side, and always tempered the greeting to a shorter 'morning', dropping the 'good' part.

"Compare anything to worst case scenario..." and it usually made it look good. "Not so shabby."
