Erm, my computer seems to have died. I'm using Virgin's internet (£1 for 25 minutes! Rip off merchants...) Can anyone tell me why it is that when I forget to top up my electric meter and it runs out, I have such trouble getting my pc to do anything once the electric's on again? The monitor and printer work, it's just the hard drive. Unplugging ( Read more... )

Power cuts play havoc with PCs, in my experience.

Virgin have suddenly doubled their interweb prices. It used to be £1 for an hour. FROWN.

Doubled the prices but severely cut down on the number of terminals. They only have four now and only three were working. There is actually NOWHERE in Leeds that you can use the internet, scan, print, use Word etc. There's the library, which is free, but you can't go on for as long as you want. *thinks* Maybe I should just open one meself...

PC's really don't like the power disappearing on them, as they try to make things seem faster by only pretending to save stuff to disc, and then really properly writing it a second or so later.

If you want I could pop round and have a look at it for you ?

Well, the nice man at Comet thinks I need to replace the powerpack. Can you do things like that? Or should I take it to a shop?

Changing the power supply is easy, thats not a problem for me.

Unfortunately, until I get to look at it properly I can't guarentee that the power supply is at fault. It sounds like the man from comet was guessing what the problem might be.

Admittedly, cheaper power supplies can fail and are the cause of a lot of PC problems, so it's likely to be a pretty good guess. I could pop round with one of my power supplies and try it. It shouldn't take long to find out if it is the problem or not.

Hi Claire! Long time no chat :(

If the power has been cutting off while the computer was on, it's kinda likely that the hard drive was damaged in some way. When you turn off the PC "properly", the hard drive should slow down and spin to a stop, but if power is just cut out it can just go thud (Technical term :S ) and get minor damage. That would probably explain what's up. You could try replacing the power supply...but my guess is it's the hard drive :(

Actually it's all ok :) (The power ran out when the computer was off)Nigel came round, plugged the cable in the back and it worked! Typical, I lost count of the number of times I did that!
How are you anyway?

Hehehe! Well at least it's ok! :)
I'm pretty good. I'm finishing off my MA dissertation at the moment, hpoing to get that done soon. I haven't really been out to too many gigs lately. No-one seems to play Sheffield that much. But generally, I'm getting by :)
