A small creature zipped past just in Nix's periphery. It was sleek and dark, but it didn't move like you'd expect it to. Rather than swoop, it would flit back and forth as it moved forward. Its wings were nearly a blur as it circled once and then continued to move forward. On its second pass, it was a little easier to see, and its beak didn't look right either... it was like nothing so much as a cross-breed between a hummingbird and a hawk. A moment later, it was halfway to the mountains to the southeast.
She found it curious that the creature had only fluttered in her general location and nowhere else. Watching it go in the direction of the mountains. Taking a risk, she changed into her summons form and flew after the small creature.
The humminghawk dove into the crags, followed some complicated path for which it took some effort to keep up. After a time, it landed on the thick leather glove of a man who watched Nix approach. He peered out from a mass of skraggled hair and leaned against a shovel silently. One eye was covered by a thick hide patch.
He wasn't in a habit of interfering with things, particularly things that he knew next to nothing about, but something about this scene drew his interest. Sometimes these feelings of his were difficult to explain, but there were always reasons.
He was hardly more than a shadow standing near the fire, but he made no particular effort to conceal himself.
It's hardly spying if you know I'm here, don't you think? came the reply in the same fashion.
Although he looked normal enough at a glance, a tall man with long silver hair, those who could see past the physical form would see an entirely different story underneath it. It was like looking at a vast shattered mirror, every shard seperate from the rest, reflecting a different aspect of not one life but dozens, yet they were all held together by some unseen force. Even though he seemed to be comprised of so many different things, he was simply himself, too.

Phoenix had sensed that someone was standing near the fire and naturally wanted to know who it was.

Phoenix had sensed what the man truly was but she couldn't let herself get distracted now. There were more important matters to deal with.
