The microfilm reader is warmed up and waiting for him, when he returns with the next roll of documents. There are no appointments today, no seminar applicants to see. Just a long afternoon with his own work.

His private research.

Research is an ongoing process, more journey than final destination. He's known that for as long as he has been at the Academy -- which by now seems like a very, very long time.

But all final year students feel that way, at one point or another.

This most recent round of research has been...well, even he would be hard-pressed to say that the results have lived up to his expectations. Only one experiment was even remotely close to successful, and that was likely more a reflection of the work that went into setting it up than the process of the experiment itself.

But he's patient. He's nothing if not patient.

For now, though, he will have to take his notes on the results and look at them from every conceivable angle. Look at the whole picture first, in the way that he would examine a slide of microfilm for errors and imperfections before continuing. And then go deeper.

Deeper.

Soon, he will be able to piece together all of the information he has gathered into a comprehensive whole. And when he runs his final experiment, putting the conclusions of all his theories to the test, the results will be truly spectacular -- well worth everything he's put into it.

Well worth it.

Time, he has to admit, is not exactly on his side.

But it will be, soon enough.

...he's certain of that.
