This is very well written - I love how you contrast present and past. That last line is perfect in its poignancy!

I loved the whole theme of uniting over dividing. Loved the backstory where Elizabeth asserts her independence and finds her place in the world.

She was either drowning in darkness or burning in light. Such a lovely turn of phrase!

One minor thing: should control council be control console? (This is the sort of stuff I miss in my own writing all the time)
