Last week, a Prince song came on the radio at work and one of my coworkers said "damn, that puts me in the mood for some gay bashing," which caused a room full of "professionals" to guffaw loudly for several minutes.
This week, I received a refusal letter from Sallie Mae explaining that I had been denied a financial hardship freeze on my account because I make too much money. I make $11/hr. That night on the phone, I discovered that IF I WAS MARRIED, I WOULD HAVE AUTOMATICALLY QUALIFIED. Of course, I can't get married where I live.
Today, my Mom ran into one of her brothers at a wedding. He took her aside and told her that he'd heard that I was gay, and that even though he didn't agree with my "choice" I would still be welcome in his home. He obviously doesn't remember sitting in the hospital a few years ago going off on a tirade about America wouldn't be a strong country again until god-fearing folk decided to rise up, drag us all out into the street, and burn us to death.
