religiousdebate really started me thinking about the meaning OF life versus meaning TO life. I've been, for better or worse, leaning towards the view there is no meaning OF life. Bacteria exist to create more bacteria. In kind, people exist to create more people. Without god(s), what "ultimate" meaning of life could there be ? And even WITH

Seriously though, what you said triggered a thought. What we want is "meaning" that transcends all time and space. Could there, however, be localized and temporal "meaning" even if there is no grand unifying "meaning of it all" ? An obvious visualization is lights in the darkness. They have limited scope, and may not last forever. Yet, during their time, and in their domain, they ARE light. Does meaning have to be cosmic and eternal to have meaning ?
