New York has awesome Salsa dancing On2...
Last Wednesday I went to an event at Latin Quarters, where Oscar Deleon was performing, it cost only 15 bucks with on Mike Pena's guest list to get in... If you can imagine that Deleon played at the garden at about $200 a ticket. I was like two feet away from him! What a deal.
My salsa instructor Carlos Konig came with a lot of students from his intermediate class, that included my beautiful friend Juanita... She's a super looking Mexicana from Texas, I was surprised she didn't speak any Spanish... But I really appreciate her positive attitude towards dancing with beginners like me. Most of the Salsa events have this kind unspoken cast system, where basically the newbies guys are shunned, the intermediates get a dance or two and the "Salseros" who have been dancing for years a begged for a dance by the women. On the women's side, the tiering is on looks, usually the less attractive the woman "looks" the fewer guys will ask her to dance.
So yeah its a superficial crowd, but at least you can ask a girl to dance and 50% of the time she'll accept. That you'll never get a regular club.
At the moment I'm focusing on my timing and being able to keep my timing will doing turn patterns. I'm also trying to listen to the music more, because in the end that’s what really excites me, hearing these amazing singers bring all kinds of emotions out in their songs just gets me so pumped.
