Modern & Unplugged?

I thought of an interesting design project that I'm curious if anyone has attempted before. You've probably heard about homes in which people have tried to live off the grid, with little-to-no electric devices. These often seem to be some kind of dusty cabin in the woods, or something of that nature

One of my favorite non-electric devices is my hand-turned coffee grinder. Perfect for weekends when I can spend a little more time and really make brewing coffee a ritual.

My favorite non-electric device is my bed. :P

My neighborhood lost power for about 30 minutes right around bed time last week. It was eerily quiet. There's a background hum to modern life and it felt weird that it was suddenly gone.

Sadly, most of the ways I spend my day require electricity! Ultimately I laid down on my bed and read. Of course I read on my Kindle and shown an LED battery-powered light on the screen...
